Is Invisalign Better Than Braces?

Is Invisalign Better Than Braces

Neither one wins outright. Invisalign is usually the better fit for mild to moderate cases and for people who want treatment to stay private, while fixed braces still handle the most complex bites more predictably. The real answer depends on your teeth, not on the advertising.

It is one of the first questions we hear at Boston Orthodontics, and it is a fair one. Both treatments straighten teeth well. They just get there in different ways, and each has cases it suits better than the other. Here is how we actually think about the choice, so you can walk into a consultation already knowing the right questions to ask.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign straightens teeth with a series of clear, custom-made aligners instead of brackets and wires. Each aligner is a thin, smooth tray moulded to your teeth, and you move to the next one in the sequence every week or two as things shift. Worn properly, they are hard to spot in normal conversation, which is why most of our adult patients ask about them first.

What people like about it

  • Discreet. The aligners are difficult to notice, so straightening your teeth is not the first thing people see when you talk.
  • Comfortable. There are no brackets or wires to catch on your cheeks, and most people find each new tray settles within a day.
  • Removable. You take them out to eat and to clean your teeth, so nothing is off the menu and your normal brushing and flossing carry on unchanged.
  • Planned upfront. We map the movement digitally before you start, so you see the likely result at the consultation rather than hoping for the best.

Fixed braces, and why they are still here

Braces have straightened teeth for decades because they work, particularly on the harder cases. Small brackets are fixed to each tooth and linked by a wire we adjust over time to guide everything into place. They are not removable, which sounds like a drawback until you realise it is also their biggest strength.

What braces do best

  • Complex cases. Severe crowding, large gaps and significant bite problems tend to respond more predictably to fixed braces.
  • No willpower needed. Because they are fixed on, they keep working whether you remember them or not. Aligners only work while they are actually in your mouth.
  • Hard-wearing. Modern brackets cope well with daily life, and tooth-coloured ceramic options are far less obvious than the metal braces you might remember from school.

Is Invisalign better than braces for you?

This is where the real answer lives, and it is rarely a clean win for either side. A few things tip the balance.

How much your teeth need to move

Invisalign is excellent for mild to moderate crowding, spacing and minor relapse after earlier treatment. If your bite needs significant correction, fixed braces often get there more reliably. At your consultation we tell you plainly which camp you are in, even when it is not the answer you were hoping for.

How much you mind it showing

If you speak or present for a living, near-invisible aligners are a genuine advantage. If the look does not bother you, ceramic braces close much of that gap while handling tougher cases.

How your days run

Aligners suit people who can be disciplined about wearing them 20 to 22 hours a day. Take them out too often and treatment stalls. Braces ask nothing of you between appointments, and for some people that is the deciding factor.

How long it takes

As a rough guide, Invisalign runs from around six to eighteen months, and braces from about eighteen months to a couple of years. Every case is different, so we give you a realistic timeline for your own teeth once we have scanned them, not an average pulled off a chart.

A real Boston Orthodontics result: crowded teeth brought into line

What we would say at your consultation

The patients who get the best result are the ones who chose the treatment that fitted their case, not the one with the best marketing. That is the whole point of the consultation. We scan your teeth, show you what is really going on, and talk you through the option that gives you the strongest result for the time and money involved.

Your consultation is with Dr Elif Keser, a specialist orthodontist who has been straightening teeth since 1998 and is a visiting professor at Boston University. Orthodontics is the only thing she does, which is rarer than you might think.

Retainers are part of that first conversation, not an afterthought at the end. Teeth drift throughout life, so whichever route you take, a retainer is what protects the result. Retainers are included with treatment here, for adults and children alike.

Book a consultation

If you are weighing up Invisalign against braces, the quickest way to a clear answer is to have your teeth looked at properly. Our orthodontic consultation is free until 30 August 2026, normally £275, and includes a digital scan, clinical photos and a written treatment report, with an X-ray where it is clinically useful.

You will find us at 2 Grosvenor Gardens, Fourth Floor, in Belgravia, central London. Call 0203 858 0068 or book through bostonorthodontics.co.uk. If you would rather spread the cost, we offer interest-free payment plans over up to 12 months.

Frequently asked questions

Is Invisalign suitable for everyone?

No, and any honest orthodontist will tell you so. It handles mild to moderate cases very well, but complex bites are often better treated with fixed braces. A consultation is the only way to know which applies to you.

Is Invisalign better than braces for complex cases?

Usually not. For severe crowding or a significant bite problem, fixed braces tend to give a more predictable result. That is exactly the sort of thing we will be straight with you about when we assess your teeth.

Do braces hurt more than Invisalign?

Both feel tight for a day or two after an adjustment or a new aligner, then settle. Braces can rub the cheeks at first, aligners are smoother. Neither should be genuinely painful, and if something is, we want to hear about it.

Can I eat normally?

With Invisalign you take the trays out to eat, so there is nothing you cannot have. With braces you avoid very hard or sticky foods that could damage a bracket. That difference matters more to some people than others.

How much does treatment cost?

It depends on how much work your teeth need, and you will have a clear figure before you commit. Adult Invisalign starts from around £3,450, and interest-free finance over up to 12 months is available.
