Bruxism Treatment in London

What is Bruxism?

Teeth grinding, known as bruxism, is characterized by excessive muscular activity that causes prolonged and vigorous contact between the teeth, unrelated to normal functions like eating or talking. It typically occurs unconsciously during sleep but can also happen during the daytime.

What happens when you grind your teeth?

Tooth grinding can lead to wear and damage. The enamel, the hard outer layer of the teeth, can wear down, exposing the more sensitive dentin underneath, resulting in sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks. In severe cases, grinding can cause cracked, chipped, or even loose teeth.

Furthermore, bruxism strains the jaw muscles and joints, potentially leading to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. This condition is characterized by pain or discomfort in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, and symptoms may include a clicking or popping sound when moving the jaw, difficulty opening the mouth wide, and headaches or earaches.

Chronic teeth grinding can also affect overall oral health, causing or worsening gum recession and leading to bone loss around the teeth. Additionally, bruxism can disrupt sleep patterns, causing sleep disturbances for both the grinder and their sleeping partner. Treatment options include wearing a mouthguard at night to protect the teeth, stress management techniques, and addressing any underlying sleep disorders. Regular dental check-ups are essential for monitoring the effects of bruxism and implementing timely interventions.
